Book Overview

Why do beekeepers use smoke machines when collecting honey? Can a bee really sting only once? Why do bees "dance"? In concise, detailed text and abundant illustrations that range from the humorous to the scientific, Charles Micucci offers a wide-ranging and spirited introduction to the life cycle, social organization, and history of one of the world's most useful insects. Another book to help me become a bee-keeper...

I have been collecting books about keeping bees. When I retire, that is what I want to do...tend bees. I have many books on the subject written in adult form, but this one is written very simply so that even children can understand it. I first saw it in my school's library and checked it out when I was going to have the children learn a song about bees and listen to Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumblebee." I always try to include a book for visuals in my music lessons. I fell in love with the book and had to order it for myself. It tells the complete life-cycle of the honeybee and the illustrations are wonderful! I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about honeybees!

A great book for reading age children

I purchased this book for my 10 year old son who is passionate about learning all about insects. This book is wonderfully illustrated with short paragrahs and description of the habits and life of the honeybee. I highly recommend it for children of reading age.

Bee-utiful!

I recently checked out a couple of books from the library about bee's for my nine year old granddaughter, who loves honey! She is a bit of a reluctant reader, but I thought a book about something she loves would 'hit the spot' and this one did. She enjoyed learning about the life of bees through nicely illustrated pages and concise paragraphs. I was surprised at how much I learned, too! There is a two page section that shows some different flowers and trees from which bees gather nectar - that gave me the idea to search local stores and the Internet to buy different types of honey and a honey comb. Having the book and 7 different samples of honey has turned into a wonderful family learning experience. I commend the author, Charles Micucci, for his selection of facts and his presentation of them to young readers.

Busy Bees

I teach First Grade and we are working on a unit on bees. This book has beautiful illustrations and all anyone would want to know about bees. It also tells about the various types of honey and bees. There is an diagram of a beekeeper in his/her protective clothes. This book has helped make my class wild about bees.
