For Edward King life has been unbearable since the loss of his wife twenty years earlier. Unfortunately, he quickly discovers, there is a price to be paid for taking such a selfish action and he finds himself in between Heaven and Earth, unable to move on until a lesson has been learned. Enter Jack, a man whose own checkered past has kept him in that in-between realm, a place they call Almost Heaven, until a penance has been paid that will allow him to move on. His job is to remind Edward of the value of the life he threw away, to take the bitter, cynical soul in his charge and show him that the life he thought he no longer wanted, the one he thought so full of mistakes and regrets, was the one he was destined to have and the right one for him. The lessons are sometimes hard, sometimes enjoyable, but all are designed to help Edward understand in death what it really means to be alive.
