The Lectionary for Sundays and Feast Days, Volume 1, YEAR A: A guide for Preachers, Teachers, Catechists and anyone wishing to reflect on the Gospels ... for Sundays and Feast Days, YEAR A)
Very many commentaries have been written on each of the four gospels. This volume is not an addition to the list! Instead, it sets out to provide a commentary which is entirely dedicated to those gospel texts which are found in the Lectionary for Sundays and Feast Days used by the Catholic Church. It will also apply for the most part to the Common Lectionary. While the contents make use of up to date critical exegesis, they do so with a view to exploring gospel texts in their liturgical settings, and so much attention is given to how these texts develop from week to week (In Ordinary Time), and how they relate to Liturgical Seasons when they appear as such. Each entry begins with some questions to ponder, allowing the reader (preacher, catechist, prayerful reader of scripture or whatever) to engage with the gospel passage itself in a prayerful and meditative way, and not only as an academic exercise. The focus is primarily on gospel texts, but on occasion, and where appropriate, reference will be made to other biblical texts, and in particular to other texts for the occasion being considered. This will tend to happen more often on feast days or on Sundays within the four major liturgical seasons, since these lend themselves to a greater uniformity of theme in the readings that is normally found in the Sundays of Ordinary Time, where we would expect only correspondence between Old Testament and Gospel readings. The overall aim of this type of commentary is to encourage and resource thoughtful readers of the liturgical gospels to explore the riches of the liturgical texts, with a view to enabling them to hear more clearly the Word of God, which is not a text confined to a page, but something alive and active (c.f. Hebrews 4:12).
