All Play and No Work Makes Bertram an Embarassed Beaver
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 18 years ago
Boys particularly love this book. The idea of a lazy beaver skipping out on work to play and then making excuses is a delightful concept. Bertram is never late for dinner, but skips out when work comes out. He is off making paper sailboats, fishing, or catching a nap. One day as winter is approaching and all the beavers are preparing the dam, Bertram is off playing as usual. He makes an excuse for not working when confronted by his uncle (he has a toothache- an untruth), and finds himself in the dentist's chair. When the evidence of his overgrown teeth (from not working) presents itself he receives a choice, work with the rest of the beavers or leave the colony. He makes a turn around and discovers that work is fun! He later marries and has a little baby beaver, and his wife and he have a very good laugh about his former lazy days. At the end of the book real facts about beavers are included. Teachers can use this book with their elementary classes (1st - 3rd grade or so), stressing work ethic, honesty, and doing your share. It was my son's FAVORITE book, and I had to read it every night! Now I read it to every class I have. The detailed illustrations of beavers' construction on the dam (sort of like the Hoover Dam...) and having fun out of the elements in the winter (skating, dining in fancy restaurants, and the like) are what hook boys the most!
