The Journey into English reads like an exuberant, well-informed response to a childs query as to the history of English. At times it's long winded and somewhat scattered, but Brooks tries to pack in as much interesting detail and important data as possible. The difficulty of this task is evident when you realize that a child isn't likely to grasp some of the lesser known references. In final praise of Donna Brooks, I would like to say that her effort to amass the essentials and construct a book on this subject is a brave one which fills a void. This is the only child oriented publication that was readily available when I began searching and it is obviously a result of her own enthusiasm in educating a small population of young people who might want an answer to the question: Where and when did English begin and who is speaking it now?
