The Hutton Settlement in Spokane, Washington, is a remarkable embodiment of philanthropy, altruism, and stewardship. L.W. Hutton built and endowed his home for children, orphaned or otherwise in need... This description may be from another edition of this product.
I grew up here. Lived at the Hutton Settlement for 10+ years and have now been a history teacher for 10 years. Let me tell you, this book shows the ups and down of a man just trying to make a difference. It shows the extremes that one very special couple would go to in order to make life special for a child. From the historical standpoint, it is extremely accurate, though I can see where those historically-challenged may find it long to endure. I use it in my classroom as a refence to mining, women's rights, humantiy, and life in general of the time. Shows great progression and endurance of that "special place to live"
Great history book on a very interesting place

The Hutton Settlement is an amazing place, which is easily understood after reading this book. It fascinated me that a man could be as forward thinking with regards to children's welfare as Levi Hutton was. This book is a history of his generosity as well as an understanding of where the Hutton Settlement is today. The writing style is a bit dry as it IS a history book and there is a lot of history to tell. The book, from my understanding, was extremely well researched, but I've also been told that the records for the Hutton Settlement have been extremely well cared for by the Board of Directors. This is somewhat of a specialty book as it's about a small place in a fairly small area with an extremely large heart. The main issue that isn't dealt with in the "specialty book" section is that this is a "small place in a small area" that has helped raise a large number of children in a lifestyle they would have never been accustomed to before, and this "small place in a small area" is a sign of hope for humanity as it shows that anyone can help with just a little heart and a little initiative.
