I picked up this book by chance and then I couldn't put it down. It paints a wonderful picture of life after the Second World War of various people connected with a mansion in England. It's an "upstairs and downstairs" type of story where you get to feel how life was for each of the characters through their diaries and letters. There is even a child's contribution throughout the story complete with realistic spelling mistakes appropriate for her age! The story is at once complicated and simple, but never boring. The author's vocabulary and the way each of the characters "speak" adds much to the authentic atmosphere. I can't wait to read another book by this author! If it's even half as good as this one, I'll enjoy it.
