Book Overview

Work, stress, junk food, caffeine, colds, late nights, and all the other challenges our bodies face everyday can take their toll, depleting the basic vital energy the Chinese call chi. Ginseng and the tonic herbs-especially when combined with changes in diet and lifestyle-can replenish depleted chi, restoring balance in the body, invigorating the immune system, and enhancing strength and stamina. Author Paul Bergner explains the Chinese holistic approach to health in simple terms, describing how to use ginseng and the tonic herbs for the best possible results. Athletes will want to use ginseng to improve endurance. People recovering from illness will find it builds strength, vitality, and resilience. Women can use tonic herbs to ease the symptoms of menopause, and men can use them to increase sperm count and sex drive. In fact, just about anyone can improve his or her helath with tonic herbs-this book shows you how. About the Author Paul Bergner is an herbalist and author of The Healing Power of Garlic. He is clinic director at the Rocky Mountain Center for Botanical Studies in Boulder, Colorado, and an editor of Medical Herbalism and Clinical Nutrition Update.

Great Book

This book answered all the questions I had about ginseng. I highly recommend it to anybody who is health oriented. Too many people have the tendancy to use herbs and supplements however without realizing that too much or not enough can affect your health in a negative way. If you are serious about taking ginseng, it is very important to know how to use ginseng or you will be sorry!

Excellent resource on how herbs work as tonics.

This book not only offers a great overview of ginseng research, but Bergner goes out of his way to explain how to purchase ginseng, other tonic herbs, and Chinese patent medicines. In fact, there is a chapter on explaining constitutional medicine and the terms "excess" and "deficiency." Wow! So helpful to us folks who are unfamiliar with these concepts. Bergner's stories of people who have suffered early aging effects from taking too much ginseng over many years is absolutely fascinating and informative. Robyn Klein, editor of The Herbalist
