Brian Wildsmith brings his exceptional talents to one of La Fontaine's most popular fables. Never before has there been such a distractable hare, a more plodding but sympathetic tortoise, or a more colorful backdrop for their race. Many wonderful Wildsmith animals are assembled here to cheer them along.
This is a well-told rendition of Aesop's fable about The Hare and the Tortoise, based on the poetic version written by Jean de La Fontaine. In this story, a tortoise challenges a hare to a foot race, and because he patiently and persistently walks to the finish line, while the hare stops to eat and take a nap, the tortoise wins the race. Wildsmith's paintings are colorful and busy with detail, and his unusual use of perspective renders this story quite pleasing in its visual aspect. The tension builds pleasingly to the surprise ending. In selecting stories for children I try to minimize those with explicit moral lessons like this; but Aesop's Fables are so important in Western literature, and this one in particular is so well-known, that it is very nice to have a well-illustrated version.

The book The Tortoise and the Hare is a great book for children to read. Most books for children this age are non colorful and are not that illustrated. This book has bright, colorful pages, and i enjoyed reading it alot. I would recomend this book for preschool and older just because the words are small and some are hard to pronounce. The Tortoise and the Hare tells that you can never judge someone by what they look like or haow slow they are. The tortoise one because he was confident in what he was doing, he was determined to win the race and he did. The hare was upset but he fell asleep. that was his fault. He learned his lesson.
