Callie Gray always assumed she would never marry, until she took a leap and became a mail-order bride. But when she arrives in Sweetgum, Texas, she gets the shock of her life. Her husband is dead, and his brother proposes she marry him, for the sake of his orphaned nephew and nieces. Jack Tyler warns her not to hope for a love match--theirs is strictly a convenient marriage. But Callie yearns for a true partnership with the man who has unexpectedly captured her heart. Now she must convince him what he truly needs is a lifetime of love, faith and family--with Callie by his side.

One of the first Steeple Hill historicals that I've read...or should I say completed. I enjoyed every chapter of it. The warmth and charm definitely rub off and I found myself smiling and crying throughout. The story follows plucky heroine Callie Gray who is ever true to her faith as she embarks upon a marriage by proxy. Only problem? The husband she's never seen perishes a week before she arrives in the aptly named Sweetgum, TX. Instead of a readymade family, she's faced with grieving children and their newly arrived uncle Jack. Jack's not prepared for a family or settling down. He's made his career as an explosive expert working for the railroads. But the children need a father and a mother. Callie is ready to step into the role as caretaker, but not a new marriage with Jack. And the last thing Jack wants is another hand-me-down from his older brother. But God works in mysterious ways and knits this family together with love and His purpose. Finely crafted and warmly written, the Hand-Me-Down Family is worth every penny.
