Luminous full-color paintings mark a rich tale of a gypsy couple who tire of traveling and settle down to build a cottage in the woods, where they find quiet joy in their relationship with nature. This description may be from another edition of this product.
My children, ages 5 and 7 at the time, thoroughly adored this book. The gypsy husband worked hard and his gypsy wife took such care of the home, after their life settled and they no longer roamed. One thing they looked forward to every year was the cherries from the tree in their yard. And every year the birds took "their" portion of the delicious fruit. When at last the cherry tree can produce no more, the gypsies are amazed to see the "fruit" of the birds, who weren't just making off with the goods, but ensuring the continuation of the cherry trees. My children learned a lesson, but in such a way they both were enchanted. They had me read it again and again, both of them saying how the characters were so real. Ms. Pochocki painted a very vivid picture of the gypsies and their life, the birds, the cherries and the trees, we felt we could see, smell, and taste everything going on. Excellent book.
