Heather and Picket are extraordinary rabbits with ordinary lives until calamitous events overtake them, spilling them into a cauldron of misadventures. They discover that their own story is bound up in the tumult threatening to overwhelm the wider world. Kings fall and kingdoms totter. Tyrants ascend and terrors threaten. Betrayal beckons, and loyalty is a broken road with peril around every bend.Where will Heather and Picket land? How will they make their stand?
I forgot how long ago I ordered this book, but to be fair it was for my daughter and she goes through fits and spurts of reading. Rather than force her to read a book that she lost interest in, I read it and am so glad I did! The prologue set the scene for the story, although it was a bit tricky keeping track of the characters as the backstory unfolded, but the story was so well written that once the action started I didn’t want to put the book down. Heather and Picket are very well-written characters with a lot of depth, and it’s hard not to feel empathy for both of their perspectives as they learn how to navigate a life completely uprooted by war.
Great book with wonderful messages

We listened to this book with my 4 kids (9, 9, 6, 3). My 9 year old son enjoyed it most, though all 3 big kids were invested in the story. It is a lovely book with good vs evil, wonderful character development, and a wonderful plot. Solid book that extols the values of kindness, courage, and hard work without being too preachy. Definitely a favorite around here!
The Green Ember is one of my favorites!

I love this series so much! (Note: this is the first book in a series of 4, and it ends quite suspensfully, so I recommend ordering the other books, Ember Falls, Ember Rising, and Ember's End with this one) This book is full of exciting twists and turns. I have read the whole series twice, and I loved it every time. I would probably recommend this series for 4th-5th grade and up, depending on reading skill. (it might be a little long/hard to read for a 4th grader) If you are reading this as a family, it is probably fine for younger ages too. Those are just minimum ages though, I am in high school and this series is one of my favorites. The plot is so well-written. The main characters are two rabbits, Heather and Picket Longtreader. They find out secrets about their family's past, fight wolves and falcons, and face off against Morbin Blackhawk and his evil army. The series has the perfect ending. I love the occasional illustrations. This book deserves six stars! (Note: If you like The Green Ember, there are six extra books that follow side characters: The Wreck and Rise of Whitson Mariner, The Black Star of Kingston, Prince Lander and the Dragon War, The Last Archer, The First Fowler, and the Archer's Cup)
