Another Rabbi Winter Mysteries

Rabbi Telushkin writes another excellent mystery along with some very thoughtful comments on a number of contempory subjects. I highly recommend this book.

This past Friday night, after the Shabbos meal, I began reading The Final Analysis of Dr. Stark to finish it during one sitting hours later. The opening scene is a modern version of a classic Chassidic story told by R'Shlomo Yosef Zevin replacing Rabbi Daniel Winter for the Chassidic Rebbe. The plot and mystery surrounding the murder of Dr. Noah Stark, one of L.A.'s renowned psychiatrists, is absolutely brilliant. The book's surprise ending is shocking and disturbing, giving me a knot in my stomach, raising profound moral questions, including, "Do the ends justify the means?" As was true regarding this book's predecessor in the series--The Unorthodox Murder of Rabbi Wahl--,while this was certainly great entertainment and a thrilling mystery, the book is so much more, containing a great deal of Torah wisdom. Contained herein are piercing insights into Judaism's teachings concerning subjects as diverse as gossip (through the publication of Rabbi Winter's book Sticks and Stones and his lively debate with a gossip columnist), justice, the sanctity of life, and belief in G-d after the Holocaust. (Rabbi Telushkin published a book similar to that of his fictional character Rabbi Winter's titled Words That Hurt, Words That Heal.) I eagerly look forward to reading the third and final book in the Rabbi Daniel Winter mystery series, An Eye for An Eye.
