Adriaen Block claimed Connecticut for the Netherlands. Before the Europeans arrived, the indigenous people had called the place Quinnenhtukqut, which means Long River. In 1638, the Dutch purchased the area from the Quinnipiac Indians for an assortment of silverware, tools, and clothes.
