Tobias Wolff is the only writer to whom I've written a fan letter--late at night, when I couldn't stop reading and was so touched by yet another sharp and lovely image that I couldn't help myself. He is an innovator. He often ends stories with a paragraph or so in the mind of a peripheral character, but what in anyone else's story would seem sloppy in Wolff serves to open up a slice of reality into a whole universe. People have compared him to Carver, but I have often found Carver's short stories dry, lugubrious or pretentious. Wolff accomplishes what Great Novelists such as Balzac, Dostoevsky and Henry James did, but in small, crystalline stories. He taught me that it doesn't have to have a landau, a troika or a carriage to be immortal literature. If fame were based on merit, he would be one of few English-language writers of the 20th century to last.
