From the mass of technical materials on navigation, boathandling, weather, et cetera - Budd has distilled a short book which captures the essence of the art of seamanship as needed to get the CG license and be called "Captain". His explanations and diagrams are clear and easy to understand. This book is more like sitting across the table from a "salty dog", where too many preparation books are more like having a oceanographic engineer lecture. No book will substitute for time on the water, but with some background, this book can help you get your license and learn from those 60 or 120 days of experience instead of having just one day of experience 60 times. It worked for me - 100 ton mate near coastal with towing endorsement first time!
