The Captain's Dog: a dog's view of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Part 3 of 4, of Robert Scott McKinnon's version of President Jefferson's Lewis and Clark Expedition, featuring Seaman, the Expedition's dog."Our dog, Captain. Our dog."The Corps, high in the Rockies, finds itself in a nasty blizzard, hustles on down the western slopes of the Rockies, follows what is now known as the headwaters of the Clearwater River in Idaho, only to learn from friendly Indians they barely missed a heavily armed, mounted patrol on the pass. What patrol? From where?A patrol forced to turn around because of the storm?Seaman lingers at the hot springs to enjoy one last hot bath before he catches up with his Captain and the Expedition only to be interrupted by the arrival of the mysterious patrol. And Praetorian.------------------------------------To Seaman's gratification, it is important to have friends in high places.--------------The three pups snarled softly, lined up between Seaman and their mother. The hair on their backs stood straight up; they bared razor sharp teeth. Nobody, if they had anything to say about it, nobody was going to push their baby sitter around. Not Uncle Seaman.Seaman took the moment to sniff noses with the she-wolf, then the male. He wagged his tail at the pups, gave one a big kiss. It was great to have friends in high places.A raging Praetorian came charging through the trees well into the clearing before he realized the cavalry had arrived. The male wolf charged to the left; the female wolf charged, to the right; Seaman and the pups charged down the middle.Everybody collided, raged, rolled over, and over, and over, and the snarling chaos rolled and bounced across the meadow, went over a cliff, rolled down the mountainside into the timber, bounced off trees, bounced through and under the underbrush and deadfall, a furry ball of snarling, growling, tearing, ripping, raging, slashing fangs. The fight rolled into a deadfall of fir and pine and larch, where it ended as abruptly as it had started.
