another delightful Freddie and Grace adventure

"Yes, God had given him much more than he deserved, and sometimes, he wondered if God had given him more than he could manage." It's another delightful adventure with Freddie and Grace. I loved their rhythm, energy, and compatibility as a married couple though they are polar opposites. Their love is tender, passionate, and all-consuming and it gives both of them such solid ground to stand on. Of course, Grace and her propensity to fall into trouble gets them into mystery and mayhem in Egypt this time. Seeing Egypt of 1914 through Grace's insatiably curious eyes was a definite treat. Freddie's long-suffering love for Grace was extremely sweet and made him more swoon-worthy (is that even possible?). Freddie's valet Elliott has a subplot in this story which was absolutely fabulous. Filled with suspicious secondary characters, mysterious deaths, curious happenings, and unresolved thefts, this book cleverly and wonderfully merges Clue with Indiana Jones to create an enchanting historical fiction with a serving of comedy and intrigue. The theme of redemption and forgiveness of the past was strong throughout the story. If you've ever wanted to travel to Egypt and visit the pyramids and an archeological excavation site, this is the book for you! Just the Right Mix of Romance and Intrigue

The Cairo Curse by Pepper Basham picks up where The Mistletoe Countess ended. Freddie and Grace are off to Egypt for their honeymoon only to become entangled in a web of intrigue. Grace continues to offer soul-soothing balm not only to Freddie but to all the broken people she comes in contact with. Zahra, the street orphan, says this about Grace, “She paints sunshine with her words.” I love that. The mystery is well plotted and kept me guessing until the end, which I particularly like. And, as with all Basham books, a faith element is expertly woven throughout without being in anyway preachy. If you’re a fan of ancient Egypt, you’ll enjoy the scenes in the tombs and a bit of the history of the Pharaohs. I learned a lot about Akhenaten that I found fascinating. The Cairo Curse has all of the elements we’ve grown to love about Basham’s books – endearing characters, delightful banter, and perfectly placed truths.
