NO FEMALE STOOD A CHANCE AGAINST THE CHARMS OF LORD WESTBURY. Mathilda, Duchess of Upavon, had reason to be alarmed. Her fifteen-year-old daughter was the object of attention from the notoriously handsome embodiment of every female's fantasy: Lord Westbury. Since scandal had shadowed Mattie's own life when she wed at sixteen, she vowed her daughter would not make the same mistake. In truth, Lord Westbury's cursory call upon the schoolroom girl was all part of a lavish, under-handed plot to reclaim some land. But after one look at the lovely mother, his lordship began some scheming of his own....
I liked the plot a lot, which deserved a four star. But I did not quite care for the heroine, Mattie. While I thought she was portrayed as a innocent-orphan-turned-into-a-genteel duchess, her character was too weak and indecisive for my liking. Although she did grow into a more matured woman, but it was not until the last three pages of the book. I found I was getting frustrated with her forever "fear of been ridiculed by the society", and sincerely admired this "quite-a-catch" hero's patience and love for her, it was more than I thought of her--three stars there. But all in all, this was a decent book, I liked Ms. Wynn's other books better.
Classic Regency

Patricia Wynn is a Regency author I discovered when most of her books were out of print. In this particular book Lord Westbury is dispatched by his mother to make contact with the dowager Duchess of Upavon with an eye to reclaiming a piece of disputed land. Guided by his mother he initially inquires after her daughter Pamela, needless to say it is dowager duchess that captures his heart. I like her dialog and the way her characters interact.
