Originally published in 1912. Preface: In preparing the following pages I have intended that the descriptions, thou accurate, should not obscure the beauty of the grasses with a mass of techinical terms, but should be so simple that the wayfaring man who endures the verdure of our waysides might become more intimately acquainted with the most common plants. An important aid in recognizing the grasses will be found in the illustrations, which, made from the living plants present not only the most noticeable characteristics of growth, but also delineations of the parts of the flower. The techinical descriptions, which follow the general descriptions, are the result of careful observations and measurements of many species. The contents are extensively illustrated throughout. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive.
