This was the first F.M. Parker book I have read and I read constantly. I will certainly read many more! I'm not sure how it qualifies as a Western since the setting is New Orleans in the mid 1850s. There is gunplay, but only one character fits the typical "cowboy" image and that is only because he is a former Texas Ranger. It is more of a Southern than a Western setting. I really enjoyed the plot, different than the usual Historical novel. It does portray the dark side of New Orleans' history (slavery, dueling, Yellow Fever, etc.) Interesting read with a good bit of suspense!
