Not just the death, but the life and beliefs of RFK

I certainly remember where I was. My father was stationed in Japan and we were outside his office in the car, waiting for him to get off from work. There was only Armed Forces Radio to listen to and when they broke in we assumed it was the standard sort of bulletin where some airman was asked to report to his office. Instead it was the news that Bobby Kennedy had been shot after winning the California primary.Of coure Andrew Santella's "The Assassination of Robert F. Kennedy" is about RFK's entire life and not just his death. In his conclusion Santella talks of how "Kennedy never got the change to offer his hopeful vision of the future as the president of the United States." Santella tells of Kennedy's life in politics, from serving as assistant counsel to Senator Joe McCarthy's subcommittee to being his brother's Attorney General in the Kennedy Administration to being elected to the U.S. Senate from New York (the first famous "outsider" to do so). Santella makes a point of often using extensive quotations from Kennedy to give a sense of his political positions. This book is illustrated with black and white photographs, even on the cover, which is perhaps an effort to reinforce the somber tone of the subject matter. There is one photograph of Kennedy lying on the floor after having been shot, but it is not as lurid as some of the others I have seen. Young readers will follow Santella's lead and conclude that Kennedy was going to win the Democratic nomination for the Presidency and will wonder at the whims of fate that led the Senator to take a last second alternative route that led him right to the assassin."The Assassination of Robert F. Kennedy" is another one of the outstanding Cornerstones of Freedom series, which is an excellent first choice for teachers or students who want to get beyond the brief coverage of events afforded by even the best history textbook. Certainly this is an abbreviated version of RFK?s life and ideology, but this book is just the first step in learning about these things.
IMPORTANT HISTORY
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 24 years ago
This is an excellent starter book for reaching the younger generations about the late Senator Robert Kennedy, a man who was and remains a central figure in history. The author, to his credit treats his subject AND his viewers with respect. This book brings history to the forefront and, as an additional bonus includes young readers to develop a sense of the times of Robert Kennedy and the issues and questions he faced during his life time. I feel this is a good book.
