Sadie Erb is a shy young woman who loves her work and her father. She is known as the chicken lady and barely makes a living selling eggs. Worried about her father's declining health she has forgone courtship and devotes her time to him. At the same time, he is determined to find her a husband before he passes, but his choice is not the best.

Lloyd Fehr loves animals and he has a dream, one he doubts can ever happen. He also has feelings for Sadie but believes her future is with an Englisch newcomer. When Lloyd overhears a disturbing conversation about Sadie he struggles with whether to tell her or mind his own business.

Sadie's life changes when she stumbles across an injured dog. She wants to find the dog's owner but first, she needs to find a way to save its life.
