I'm a life coach, and I read a lot of books on relationships. I just finished reading Rosenblum and Dugas's book. It's great. I'm a big John Gottman fan. Gottman's Seven Keys to Successful Marriage explains the dynamics of couples better than any other book, and it's based on scientific observation which is also unique. Until now, it has always been my first recommendation to clients or friends with couples issues. Now, I think Five Secrets will overtake Seven Keys as my first recommendation to couples with challenges. It's more user friendly and therefore usable. When I have a client in the midst of troubles, someone that needs strategies to get to the heart of things right away, I will share the five secrets of marriage from the heart, and suggest that s/he read the book. It sets forth a clearer, immediately implementable approach.

This book has a lot of "meat and potatoes" of how to have great relationships with anyone you care about - especially your spouse. It gives you the answer of what to do next when things are not going well and you want to make it better. An easy read that helps me get on the other side of despair to joy.
Nuts & Bolts Approach to All Relationships

This is a very powerful and, more important, very useful book. I tend to shy away from self-help books, because they are often pious and full of platitudes. This book gives you an easily remembered acronym to lay out a set of rules (better, 'suggestions') for creating deeper and more loving communication in any relationship. Although the focus of the book is on marriage, one of its strengths is that it demonstrates the usefulness of the approach in a variety of relationships--with friends, children, parents; it is about a wide gamut of human interactions. The book is constructed as a story, which is involving from beginning to end. The writers invite you to empathize with the protagonists on all sides of the central problem. And the problem is not just a straw man; it is a real, believable, seemingly intractable dilemma that many of us have faced. Finally, the book also demonstrates the importance of the social network within which a marriage exists and is nurtured. The gift the book gives us is an approach not only to improving our intimate relationships but also to helping and supporting others whose relationships are, in the words of the book, hitting a rough patch. It is about community as well as marriage. We need books like this

I'm always skeptical about self-help books, but this one converted me. With warm, funny, cut-to-the-chase stories, it gives you the simple tools you need to be a MUCH more loving and effective person. And it's mercifully free of psychobabble and verbiage. I now often find myself going down the HEART checklist and figuring out how to do everything better. This book will make you a wiser person.
