The scandal of the 1991 Tailhook convention will go down in history as the most sordid and divisive episode in the history of the U.S. Navy, rocking it to the highest levels. This book explores the link between the events of that night in Las Vegas and the legal ban on women in combat. That link forms the substance of this narrative as it portrays one of the most traditional organizations in the world, the U.S. Navy, on the brink of historic change. She recalls the role of female warriors throughout history as she introduces today's fierce women in the jet pilot pipeline, for whom the term armor-plated ceiling was more than a harsh metaphor. I'm a military officer, but never really knew the details of the Tailhook scandal. I figured it was about time I did, since it has had such an impact on military life for both genders. This book was very well-written and engaging. I thought it would be a dry read, but it was honestly quite hard to put down. The opening chapter begins with the details of a male naval officer giving out "free leg shaves" to women during the notorious Tailhook convention of 1991. I definitely recommend this book to anyone remotely interested in the topic.
