Good Basic Information On Tae Kwon Do, But Where Are The Kicks?
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 16 years ago
This book contains some very good basic information on a variety of subjects such as; history and philosophy, along with some very brief descriptions of a variety of stances, blocks, and strikes. However, I didn't see any references (basic or otherwise) to any kicks, which I found rather strange since this was a book dedicated to the art of Tae Kwon Do. Although I must admit that there was some kicking being demonstrated when it came to the section on Olympic sparring, but none whatsoever on how to execute even a few of the basic kicks. Strange! The author goes on to briefly demonstrate and explain Palqwe #1 (Il-Jang), Taeguek #1, and Chon-Ji, which are the first of a series of respective forms for each pattern demonstrated. The basic layout and format for the book was well done and I really don't have any complaints as far as that goes, but neither do I have any great praise. Overall I have to say that the content of the book lived up to its title concerning an essential introduction to the art of Tae Kwon Do. However, I am still puzzled as to why there were no kicks demonstrated. I would highly recommend that you purchase the following book if you want to get the true history of Tae Kwon Do. A Killing Art: The Untold History of Tae Kwon Do Shawn Kovacich Martial Artist/Author of the Achieving Kicking Excellence series.
