Swimming Sick: A Journey of Chronic Illness

I continued stacking up the yards. By January of 2010 I was well on track to finish. And that is when I began to really take it seriously. When I thought that swimming a million yards was on the outer edge of possibility I don't know how committed I actually was. But now, halfway through the year I could see the end in sight, and suddenly, making that yardage goal became the most important thing in my life. The million yards evolved into something besides a physical accomplishment for me. It was a much needed mental and spiritual destination as well. The more I swam, the closer I got to that magic number, the more my mental attitude changed. One day, out of the blue I realized I wasn't a sick swimmer, a person that was ill but swam anyway. No, I was swimming sick. A swimmer first that just happened to have a few pretty major physical things wrong with them.A sick swimmer or swimming sick? The gulf between those two perspectives is greater than the breadth of the Grand Canyon. Victim or victor? Yet again I say that the whole of life flows from that decision.
