In "Bed Hangings," poet Susan Howe and artist Susan Bee collaborate for the first time. This series of poems explores the themes of colonial America and its decorative arts, religion and Puritanism through a visual and verbal investigation of the metaphysics of beds, curtains, and hangings. The poems and pictures play off each other in a humorous, mystical and occasionally mischievous manner. One of the most crucial and renowned experimental poets and essayists of the past three decades, Susan Howe's books of poetry include "Pierce Arrow" (1999) and "The Europe of Trusts: Selected Poems"(1990), and her books of criticism include "The Birth Mark: Unsettling the Wilderness in American Literary History" (1993) and "My Emily Dickinson"(1985). She has won countless awards and was elected a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets in 2000. Susan Bee is a New York-based painter and book artist. She has previously created a visual counter-text for the poems of Charles Bernstein in five books, including "Log Rhythms" and "Little Orphan Anagram"; she is also the coeditor of M/E/A/N/I/N/G, a magazine of critical art writing.
