Picture a crossword puzzle in which you fill in numbers instead of letters -- only more challenging and more addictive. That's Su Doku, already a sensation in Japan and the UK! Attention, puzzle... This description may be from another edition of this product.
Suduku is a placement number puzzle. The aim of the puzzle is to enter a number from 1 through 9 in each cell of a 9×9 grid made up of 3×3 subgrids (called "regions"), starting with various numbers already given in some cells (the "givens"). Each row, column and region must contain only one instance of each number (1 through 9). Completing the puzzle requires patience and modest logical ability. Sudoku initially became popular in Japan 20 years ago, and and is now the rage in Great Britain and the rest of Europe. The Daily Telegraph Sudoku is a delightful compilation of sudoku puzzles from "gentle" to "diabolical." This writer has yet to solve a "diabolical." The opening pages are a fairly complete set of strategems for solving a sudoku, including strategies for the most difficult ones. While it is asserted by many that each sudoku can be solved by logic alone, I am not yet convinced! The rules to Sudoku are trivial to learn, but this puzzle is quickly addicting. No math ability is required, just the patience to place the digits 1 to 9 just once in each row, column and region. This book is one of the best introductions I have seen to this new puzzle craze.
