Create compelling paintings by mastering compositional techniques While happy accidents may occasionally contribute to producing strong, eye-catching paintings, conscious painting is more important.... This description may be from another edition of this product.
Excellent information for any watercolorist. Webb has long been recognized as a leader in this area. His book is witty and well organized. His painting principles are promulgated by many.
To the point with both black and white and color illustrations

Frank Webb has written a well organized, thoughtful work on artistic composition that anyone involved in the arts could benefit from. There are rich colorful examples of paintings (mostly watercolor it would appear) as well as more diagramatic nuts and bolts type examples in black and white. He gets his points about composition across like no other author that I've seen in print. Not that other authors aren't worth checking out too. He describes and illustrates things like "interlocking shapes" and "shape passages" for example, in a way that you're not likely to forget. Ditto for the rest of the book. His more structured pages show charts with various design elements (such as shape, line direction, tone, pattern, etc.) illustrated in the simplest most memorable possible way. The only other material that I've read about composition that was this organized and thorough was information that I downloaded from the internet. That information was a lot more expensive and I had to print it myself.

Frank is like a good old bottle of wine; the older he gets the better he gets.
