Wether you love him or hate him, Jean Chretien is a remarkable man. For someone who is not very familiar with Canadian history, this book was very informative. I love all the funny quotes Mr. Chretien has ever said. This book covers not only the political but also the personal moments in our former PM's life. What I particularly enjoyed is that it is not a self-glorifying book and it talk not only about the political successes but also the difficulties and the failure. And it was not boring at all!!!
The Life and Times of Jean Chretien
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 21 years ago
Whether you like him or not, Chretien was one of Canada's longest serving Prime Ministers, and here, supposedly in his own words, is the story of his political career. It began forty years ago, when in his late twenties and with almost no compitency in the English language, he joined the Trudeau government. By the early 80s, he was playing a key role in the patriation of the Canadian constitution, and in 1993 he reached the zenith of his career as Prime Minister. (The latter being beyond the scope of his book.) As Prime Minister he has succeeded in keeping Canada a stable and prosperous country, as well as maintaining a certain degree of independence in terms of foreign policy from the U.S. He may not have left as great a legacy as his mentor Trudeau, but his moderate, steady, and sometimes bemusing leadership has done much for Canada. But now that Martin has ousted him in what is nothing short of a coup, things are changing--at the helm is a Neocon in Liberal clothing, and the future looks bleak indeed.

"Straight from the heart" by Jean Chrétien was an outstanding book. You saw the prime minister for the perosn he was, not just as political leader.I reccommend this book to other people who want to learn more about our great prime minister.
A REAL voice for Canadians

This autobiography of Jean Chretien, one of Canada's most successful Prime Ministers, was incredible! He shared his great vision of Canada with all people in this book, and should be thanked. Although some may not share his vision, they should read this novel, and their opinions will be forever changed.
Verbalizes the beliefs of Canadians exactly.

I was pleasantly surprised. Mr. Chretien has taken the believes, fears, and dreams of Canadians and put them into a book. He has also given us a unique view in the reality of politics.
