THIS IS A STORY that anyone who has ever struggled with any issue can identify with and appreciate. Author Richard A. Bowen did not know it but he began his spiritual quest when he was a young boy. With no religious background or training (his mother was an atheist, his father an agnostic), he felt perplexed and bewildered amongst his Jewish, Catholic, and Lutheran friends. This lost feeling while not pleasant caused him to start searching. As a teenager, he read, philosophized with his friends, and attended classes, none of which satisfied his hunger for experiences where he could prove to himself that enlightenment was possible.Fast forward to the year 1973 when his father handed him the spiritual classic Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda and said, "Here, read this." It would be nice to think that after reading the book, Bowen's whole life changed. But it didn't. Although he loved the book, he thought he'd have to travel to India or China, study for years under a guru, and perhaps live in a cave to achieve enlightenment. He had no clue that anyone could practice yoga and meditation and become a yogi - even people who live in the West. This is the story of how one man who, after experimenting with psychedelic drugs, becoming a member of the counter-culture in the 1960's, and experiencing its disappointing end, and who was literally lost in the darkness, discovered that he could save himself and go beyond ordinary consciousness with age-old techniques of meditation and yoga. The many twists and turns the spiritual path offered him combined with numerous personal, relationship, and career issues to resolve and deal with, reveals that not only were perseverance and will power necessary; they along with companionship, guidance, and hard work helped to provide the promised results. Overcoming turned out to be its own lasting reward - and much more.
