Thought provoking beautiful novel

The reader benefits that the Lambda Literary Award winning writer is first an artist and also a poet. Each chapter is so visually complex that the reader is placed in the middle of the time, place and characters. I found this novel exquisite, sexy, intelligent, gutsy and not to be missed. The story takes place in San Francisco circa 1990. Clair Faulkner is an intelligent and desirable 36 year old, a college graduate, who has slipped into the role of career caregiver, first to her parents and than as a profession. She is single in the midst of a life change that she pursues passionately. Jo Kellywood is a 39 year old artist that pursues her art through photography, she is sexy, sensual, single and a survivor. Gillian is a delicate 36 year old divorced mother of two teenagers groping to find meaning, purpose and fulfillment in her life. Dell is a strong 50 year old in a solid long term relationship. She has had terrible tragedy in her life that she continues to fight the memories and prevent them from altering her life. Lotimarie is an exuberant, resilient 50 year old and Dell's partner of 20 plus years. She runs her own business which she is devoted. She faces her recovery from cancer bravely, head forward. Plus a host of characters that illuminate the past and present of them all. There are hard hitting issues (alcoholism, child abuse, incest, homophobia, suicide) that are delicately but forthrightly addressed. This novel leaves you thoughtfully thinking of the characters days after finishing the last page. This is a novel you will read again.
