Lesions affecting the face and mouth are of great diagnostic value providing important information to the clinician. In addition to the oral diseases which have oral symptoms, many systemic diseases have oral manifestations, and the patient may turn to either the dental or medical practitioner. Many examinations, including the BDS and postgraduate qualifications in medicine and dentistry (MRCP), contain a section on slide interpretation to measure the student's ability to manage clinical problems in an examination format.
