I recieved the book a couple of days ago and are already implementing the techniques with my clients and their parents. I work with children who have academic and behavior problems in school and I find this a valuable resource in not only finding ways to help the child, but ways to help the parents as well. I can't wait to use more of this resource!
Invaluable resource!

As a parent of a defiant child who tests everything, this book has been very helpful for our family. Dr. Bloomquist's book is well organized and straightforward, offering useful tools for teaching appropriate behavior. Most children pick up on social and emotional development cues from those around them, but for children who do not learn these skills as easily, this book is a great help in showing how to teach social/emotional skills. Bloomquist begins with an explanation of various adjustment and behavior problems in children. Next, there is a section that includes a questionnaire to aide in determining your child's needed area(s) of focus for skills training (self-control, social development, emotional development, academic development, and parent personal well-being), which I found very useful in determining which areas of focus should be of highest priority for my child. The following sections cover each of the above focus areas in detail. Sections are broken down into step by step actions to take in order to help your child develop skills in the area (ex: teach a child to perform positive social behavior by determining the target behavior, explain it in children's terminology, demonstrate the behavior, and role play the behavior with your child until s/he fully understands the target behavior). Having a child with behavior problems can be exhausting and I especially appreciated Bloomquist's section called, "Improving Parent Well-Being." He offers specific steps to help parents realize how even unhelpful thoughts can impede their child's success and shows us how to counter these thoughts by rethinking them in a more helpful manner. There are helpful charts included in each section, but they are not elaborate and time consuming for parents to use. I have found that they help my child to be more reflective of her actions and how they affect her and others. I highly recommend this book.

Using this book in Practice

This book has helped in my practice especially during the times when my clients are at camp and other activities and I won't see them for a while. This book gives parents "homework" to use with the child as well as track the child's behavior to report at our next appointment.

This book has been a godsend to my family. My daughter (14) has had learning disabilities along with ADD. She had lost her confidence in herself because schoolwork and homework seemed so hard. She began to just plain old not do it. The methods and practical methods in this booke have given her the insentive and self-disciplin to work again. Her grades are gradually improveing. So glad we tried it. It was recommended by a social worker at my daughter's school.
