I used this text for two first year calculus courses at ubc; the first dealt with differentiation and the second with integration. I had no previous experience with calculus, therefore these courses were pared down to the essentials - which this book covers well. It should be noted that the book assumes you are confident with pre-calculus algebra and several of the most common trigonometric identities, though the first chapter reviews these concepts. The book occasionally glosses over some details (ex. what d/dx means exactly; differentiate the following with respect to x) so you probably want a secondary handbook you can pick up for $10 to quickly fill in the details. The biggest strength of this book is problem solving using the calculus techniques you pick up in the book. The authors are clear and this book is in its sixth ed. which means it has been proofread thoroughly.
