For the average reader "Shadow Magic" is a good entrance to more hard core fantasy. It's an easy read with touches of magical objects and mythical creatures from days of old. If you like history of any kind, than this book is for you. It relates the past with the present within the story line as well as creating good developed characters. One of the best qualities of this book is the creation of male and female heros. Overall this book would satisfy any avid reader.

I absolutley loved this book. It was humorous and adventureous, with just the right ammount of romance in it. Like all Wrede books, the characters were fully thought out and believable. The book is an easy read, but it's not just for children either. Anyone with any love for capeable princesses, fantastic beings, magical cataclysms, political intrigue, and true love must read this book! (note: this novel can also be found in the compiliation Shadows over Lyra)

I thought the book ws excellent. My favorite charcetrs are the Wyrds but I liked rhe Shee too. If anyone thinks the Shee were to proud for your information they've every right to be. The characters were colorful and the book was intereting. I think it' one of the best books in the world. I've read about a billion books so I should know!
Wrede does it again!

The first in her incredible series about Lyra, Patricia C. Wrede's "Shadow Magic" has once again blended the trials and tribulations of royalty with the day-to-day life of the peasantry with that light touch that so endeared us in her "Enchanted Forest Chronicles." Beginning with the Journeyman Trader's infatuation with the Princess through the discovery of some family secrets, and leading up to the dramatic conclusion ending the war, the tone is mainly charming and witty. Admittedly not a literary classic, this book is still one of those rare gems that you just love to read again and again! I heartily recommend this book to any and all readers who have enjoyed Mercedes Lackey, Tanya Huff, or Anne McCaffrey. One of the only problems I had with this novel is that it is too short to truly get to know some of the side characters who may or may not have important revelations.
