Sex has always come without consequences for seventeen-year-old Evan. Until he hooks up with the wrong girl and finds himself in the wrong place at very much the wrong time. After an assault leaves Evan scarred inside and out, he and his father retreat to the family cabin in rural Minnesotawhich, ironically, turns out to be the one place where Evan can't escape other people. Including himself. It may also offer him his best shot at making sense of his life again.
As an 18-year-old, the Young Adult genre is pretty much my greatest vice, being that I love to read (kind of an addict). I think I came across this book while researching YA titles that aren't necessarily on the mainstream shelves, (as I prefer novels that are more gritty and daring with the subject matter), and I was certainly not disappointed. After reading the description I knew immediately that I wanted to read it and that it's something I'd enjoy, and I was correct in that assertion. It's nothing like I've ever read before, definitely one of a kind. As soon as I started reading, it took off fast, as in I didn't want to put it down. Although most of the middle section later on is a bit slow-moving, it's not in a bad way, definitely not enough to make you lose interest. The author takes time to build the plot and the characters in a way that really makes you feel connected to it all. The descriptiveness is amazing. The storyline really will leave you an emotional mess by the end, if you're prone to getting sentimental and emotional towards fictional characters like I am. I think it's just a beautiful story all-in-all; the perfect balance of grittiness, fun, humor, darkness, and depth. I would definitely 100% recommend (to anyone who is not too faint-hearted when it comes to mature content and swearing, of course).
