Artist's Statement:This book is a series of 44 paintings that produce images that go beyond our perceptual abilities and create visual experiences that help us think in new ways about our relationship to the natural world. This work was shaped by my interest in physics and cosmology and my basic belief that all in the universe is cosmic dust temporarily taking form. My reverence of the natural world is expressed in each brushstroke. This series was begun in 2007 and ended in 2011. The first two paintings were done with acrylic on watercolor paper, all the rest were acrylic on Ampersand Claybord (a commercial hardboard coated with kaolin clay). The size of the original paintings are 16" X 20" with the exception of a few from North Cascades and the Olympic Peninsula that are 24" X 36". More than half were done while I was living in the southern Black Hills of South Dakota and the rest after I had moved to Boise, Idaho. The paintings for this series created after the move were all inspired by artist-in-residencies I did at national parks or from painting research trips. Some of the paintings in this series have been dispersed to collectors, institutions, and family. This book brings all the work together to give the paintings a permanent visual home. I hope you enjoy it.Mark W. McGinnis
