This useful guide for church leaders covers all aspects of officer training: call, duties, ethics, the Presbyterian Constitution, and much more. Congregations will find this resource indispensable for the recruitment and training of effective church leaders. Earl S. Johnson, Jr. has revised this best-selling book to include the new standards from the new Form of Government in the Book of Order
Great Book! Many years have passed since my ordination as elder and circumstances have transpired (our church being without a minister) where I needed to look for officer training material for both elder and deacon. This is the book selected. Explaining why we do the things we do, Selected to Serve is well written book, covering both our theology and how that is expressed in our polity. I thoroughly enjoyed Selected to Serve. It served me as a great rejuvenator, providing deeper insight for my role in the church and illumination into how we as Presbyterians leaders should lead. It would make an interesting Sunday school class for your membership at large or study for current as well as officers elect. I highly recommend it.
Valuable for church officer training

We've been using this book for several years in the Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation where I'm pastor, to rave reviews from the elders- and deacons-elect. Johnson has gathered between two covers most of what Presbyterian church officers need to know about how to do their jobs. He demsytifies the Book of Order, and makes it accessible to first-time users.
