The story begins when John Edward Charles, a naval engineer loses the sight of an eye in a car accident and is told that his sea-going days are finished. About this time his mother dies from a heart attack and weeks later her lawyer calls him to Boston to read her Will. He is quite surprised when told he has inherited ten million dollars. Jack makes the difficult decision to leave the navy and buy a sea going 42 foot sailboat and sail to Bermuda. Preparing his boat for his first solo blue water cruise he meets a woman, Frannie Stoddard and falls in love. Through his friend Morgan Shell, Frannie is offered a job with his Marine Salvage Company in San Diego.Jack sails to Bermuda and is caught up in a tremendous seismic event. A large portion of the Atlantic sea bed rises up to within twenty-five feet of the surface. When local fishermen discover the shallow soundings they dive to explore the bottom and discover a Russian hydrophone. Jack, Shelly and their friend Admiral Dan Todd and local Bermudians are pulled into the Russian's net as they attempt to reclaim their sub surface listening device. The sea floor rises once again to become an island. Russian and British ships are caught on top of the island as it rises up out of the ocean leaving beached vessels strewn across the wet surface. The Russians proclaim the island as their own and a mini war breaks out. It appears there will be an all-out war until Mother Nature takes charge and makes the decision for them.
