In line with the goal of this series to disseminate Scripture scholarship to a broader public, this book examines Saint Paul's use of Scripture and tradition in his letters. Five concise chapters demonstrate Paul's citation of Israel's Scriptures (Old Testament) through the technique of "intertextuality"-offering Romans 9 to 11 as a case study-and his use of already established Christian tradition. Three primary factors are evident in shaping Paul's message of evangelization: his extensive background in Judaism, his familiarity with and frequent citation of Israel's Scripture, and his effective use of Greco-Roman rhetorical techniques. Paul thus provides a useful model for the interplay of Scripture and tradition in contemporary theology. Book jacket.
