Imagination and color permeate this fine picture book

The author and illustrator of "22 orphans" return to create a wonderful tale of imagination and color. Davy's mother sends him off to his first day of school. Aware of school bullies, Davy decides to construct his own school with whatever he can find - wood planks, wheels, and so on. Davy's "school" eventually rolls down a hill to the real school, where the other children learn of his adventure and create their own school on wheels. Veldkamp has crafted a tale sure to delight young children who are new to school. The illustrations of Hopman augment the tale; his use of curved lines and finely detailed color enhance the story line, making it all the more exciting. The hues vary throughout the story, giving it a decidedly European setting. Bound to be a favorite in any public library collection.
