This story about a courageous dog, written by best-selling author Ellen Emerson White and illustrated by award-winning illustrator Robert Blake, is the perfect gift for Christmas! It's the week before... This description may be from another edition of this product.
I am a sucker for happy ending animal stories and saw this one at the library and knew I would make my child read it as part of her schoolwork. As a second grader, it took her 40 minutes to read at a medium pace. It is about a dog looking for a home around Christmas time, but while doing that he does several heroic deeds and becomes recognized in the community as Santa Paws. One particular boy has run-ins with him and wishes he could keep him. The dog also wants the boy to take him and he spends several pages in the book looking for the boy all over town. The ending is for you to find out by yourself. The artwork is nice in the book, although is a step below my favorite such as the illustrations in the Jan Brett books. The story doesn't pull on your heartstrings too much. You feel sad for the dog, but he is never described as suffering other than being a little hungry and cold at times. I liked the book, but not enough to go out and get my own copy to keep for years and years.
