Risa Sheridan knows everything there is to know about gold-its history, its secrets, its allure, its perils. Her boss, Shane Tannahill, is addicted to the stuff, having already made the precious metal the theme of his ultrasuccessful Las Vegas gambling establishment, the Golden Fleece. Now an ancient Celtic piece is being offered to Shane for his collection, and the casino owner is hooked. But though she shares Shane's enthusiasm, Risa is wary -- because something about this particular artifact is troubling; something about it says "stay away." It is a voice that should be heeded but is not. And the artifact is placing them at the center of an insidious plot in the mad whirl and blinding glitter of Las Vegas. A remarkable novel of exhilarating thrills and passion, with unexpected twists and turns that will leave you breathless, Running Scared is another priceless example of why Elizabeth Lowell is the gold standard in contemporary suspense fiction.
when i first read the book it was great. it has great detail and also good action too. if you like action or romannce i recommend this book for you to read.
Disagrees with Negative Reviews

I almost decided not to purchase Running Scared after having read the previous reviews. However, I bought it at a discount and thought what the heck -- am glad I did. I read and collect approximately 60 series, most of them mysteries. I consider Lowell's Rarities/Donovan series to be romance/suspense and would not expect the entire book to be based on one couple's relationship. If you want strictly romance, stick to her other books (which I don't read). I like how Running Scared raced back and forth between all of the characters. I didn't care for either Shane or Risa in the previous book -- they seemed sleazy and cold. However, you learn more about them and their backgrounds in Running Scared and how they each fought their way up from a bad childhood to get where they are today. They both fight the feelings they have for each other (it's not just sex) until Risa's life is threatened which finally brings them together. From then on, although their relationship isn't always smooth, they know they belong together. I only have about 3 more chapters to finish this book and I guess I am in the minority, but it's my favorite of the Rarities Series.
Solid gold Title

Loved the story line and especially the interaction between the characters. I just wished there had been more of it! This is more for the publishers but I would be willing to pay more for an extra two or three signatures of text. I found that I was craving more in-depth interaction between Risa and Shane. If you have read the previous titles in this series with Rarities and the Donovans then you have enough background to see why these two are in love with each other but I think the relationship by itself in just this book is not fleshed out enough. I want more textual foreplay I suppose.
Less details, but terrific nonetheless

Less detail oriented than Moving Target, Lowell's new book, Running Scared is still a tour de force! One of my favorite things about these books is the accuracy of details on the interesting and varied "backgrounds" (i.e. gems, gold, art, etc.). As with her Donavan series and the previous Rarities opus, Running Scared has it all -- and leaves you wanting more.Query for anyone: Could a book with April Joy as "heroine" be in the works -- there are a couple of "tells" near the end where Ms. Lowell shows Joy's human-side? And, could the hero be Ian?Don't make us wait too long, Elizabeth.Noiret
