This is part 2 of a 3-part series, following the adventures of young Rick.
In this book, Rick has already retired as one of the youngest professors at Caltech, and he moved to the remote desert to learn how to "live off the land" with Shining Bear and his followers.
This book follows Rick learning the practical skills that makes self-reliance possible.
Though Rick begins as a young retired Caltech professor, he is now learning homestead and survival skills in a remote part of the high desert, such things as building and fixing structures, pottery, making bows and arrows, and teaching others the skills. He is living with the native man Shining Bear, and his other apprentice with whom they share their teachings and adventures.
