Retribution is a true-to-life western tale about the quest of one man who suffers the loss of his family at the hands of murderers and how he responds to the loss. He decides to find the killers and bring them to justice.

Bart Strong returns from the horrible Civil War and resumes his life as a peace officer. He studies the law, is accepted to the Missouri bar, and become a judge.

Bart's wife dies and he raises his daughter, Nettie. Nettie marries and moves to Texas to go into cattle ranching. Some years and two children later, the entire family is slaughtered by cutthroats left over from the war.

Bart resigns from the bench, gets out his Whitworth rifle and Greener shotgun, sells his home, and heads for Texas to track down and kill the men who robbed him of his family.

One by one, Bart finds the men he is seeking and brings them to his brand of justice. Along the way he works in a dry goods store and scouts for a cattle drive.

He gets shot by a drunken cowboy and is nursed back to health by a widow. He gets another chance at happiness and has to decide between vengeance and another chance at love.

Retribution puts on display the true to life emotions associated with grief and the quest to satisfy one's hatred.
