Book Overview

"This account of battle on the plains brings the period to life."-- Publishers Weekly Spring, 1876. The war cry has sounded. The Sioux and the Cheyenne are massing along the northern frontier. And even while his wife awaits the birth of their child, army scount Seamus Donegan knows he must head north to Fort Fetterman. Brigadier General George C. Crook is preparing to meet the fierce challenge laid down by the bold and brutal chief Crazy Horse, and the future hope of the nation rests in the strong hands and courageous hearts of men like Seamus Donegan. He yearns for a reunion with his wife, but the trail of that fateful campaign leads Donegan ever farther from home--toward the land of the Rosebud and a hard rain of blood and tears.

One of the best of the Plainsman series

Terry Johnston makes the battle come alive, the way he moves from how Crazy Horse is dealing with the battle, General Crook to Miles and Royall is incredible. I have become completely intrigued with the Rosebud Battle and looking for additional information. The whole Plainsman series is very good and I've enjoyed reading them all, they continue to get better and better. Can't wait to pick up the next one.

Johnson continues to make historical drama personal

His descriptions of the terrain, weather at the time of year, wildlife, and general conditions of the southeastern Montana Territory are so vividly accurate as to envelope the senses into believing you are there with Crook and his men (and woman). He takes a single historical act and brings it to life through the personalities of the characters replete with all of their emotions.Excellent reading. The pages move at a pace much quicker than expected.
