Just in time for Women's History Month, here are short, spirited profiles of twenty women who impacted life in America by speaking out against injustice and fighting for social improvements. The folksy, friendly narrative introduces such fascinating figures as Sojourner Truth, abolitionist preacher; Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, a Civil War physician; Margaret Sanger, birth control pioneer; and Doris Haddock, a ninety-two-year-old champion of campaign-finance reform. The book spans over two hundred years of American history and includes time lines for such important social movements as abolition, woman suffrage, labor, and civil rights. Readers inspired by these fiery women can use the civil action tips and resources in the back of the book to do some of their own rabble-rousing.
I originally purchased this book for my younger sister, age 11, so that she might have a source of inspiration and some positive role models. Something to show her to make her proud of all the women who came before us who fought real hard to make this country what it is now. And also something that showed that the America that our "founding fathers" built, the "land of the free" that claimed that we all had "certain inalienable rights" actually left out the vast majority of Americans: black people - enslaved and free alike, women, American Indians, poor whites, and anyone who did not own property... That it took the courage, boldness, vision, and voices of women, men, and children, of all colors and backgrounds, who were not afraid to fight and struggle against tremendous odds to make this nation live up to its founding promises of "life, liberty, and justice for all." And that this is a fight that is still with us today... With this book i hope that my little sister can picture herself as someone who can follow the footsteps of these great women and carry on the work they started... What i didn't expect was to find a book that had as much to teach me as it did to teach her! Don't i wish i could have had such a good resource when i was her age. Don't hesitate to get yourself or someone you love a copy of this great little book.
