I recently bought Quilts for Girls and Boys, by Barbara Roberts. This was my first quilting book. I was initially attracted to the book by the bright and colorful cover. My grandson is really into Star Wars, and I knew that the little space ship on the cover would be exciting for him. I had never done applique before, only patchwork so I was a little tentative about whether my first attempt could look as good as the cover, but the instructions were so thorough and complete, that I was off and running in no time. Everything I needed to know about how to applique was there in the book in an easy to understand format with lots of illustrations. Another feature I loved about this book was that 4 of the quilts could be made for either a boy or girl. As I do expect to have a granddaughter soon, this book could be used several times. I also liked the fact that instructions were given to make the same quilts with fusible web. Making the quilt in this manner would cut the time in half, but not the enjoyment of the finished product. I would recommend this book to both beginners as well as more advanced quilters. The quilt was fun to make, the applique pieces were large with easy to sew curves and it was a snap.
